My Why

Part A: Why Statement

Why: I believe that to reach the 21st century dyslexic learner we must go to the 21st century dyslexic learner in our teaching methods and resources that are available to our learners.

How: To do this we need to create digitally relevant activities and applications for the dyslexia community to complement the work being done at the therapy table.

What: By creating applications for student devices that allow them to practice dyslexia therapy skills and offer immediate, constructivist feedback, we allow our learners to gain more repetitions than possible at the therapy table alone.

Part B: Reflection

Putting students first is always going to be at the heart of dyslexia therapists. The audience for my innovation project is the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) which is the certifying organization for dyslexia therapists.  Dyslexia therapy methods are researched based and multisensory, but there has not been much change in the delivery over the years. There is not much technology involved in therapy and our students are clearly changing.  Oftentimes learners are very reluctant due to their disability and there is a limited time in therapy sessions and therapists are desperate to find ways to get more repetitions in and reach their learners. Therapists are passionate people and by reaching students where they are and potentially serving their students better, this will speak to their hearts. If given just another resource or thing they have to do and not given something to connect their students too, they are not going to be interested. As Sinek so clearly articulates in his talk, the how and the what are missed if they why is not presented and valid.  The emotional part of the brain must be reached first (TEDx Talks, 2009).

Students are moving at the speed of light when it comes to their interests and things that influence them.  If the education and dyslexia therapy communities continue to do things they way they have always been done then they will be stuck in complacency while the learner continues to change. Bringing 21st century tools to learners is something that should feel urgent when one looks at what is currently available. The hope is that once this is looked at through the lens of urgency that change can begin to occur (Kotter, 2013).
